Isaiah 2

God’s Universal Reign

2 The word which ^(A)Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

²Now it will come about that
^(B)In the last days
The ^(C)mountain of the house of the Lord
Will be established ^[a]as the chief of the mountains,
And will be raised above the hills;
And ^(D)all the nations will stream to it.
³And many peoples will come and say,
“Come, let’s go up to the mountain of the Lord,
To the house of the God of Jacob;
So that He may teach us ^[b]about His ways,
And that we may walk in His paths.”
For ^[c]the law will go out ^(E)from Zion
And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
⁴And He will judge between the nations,
And will mediate for many peoples;
And ^(F)they will beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning knives.
^(G)Nation will not lift up a sword against nation,
And never again will they learn war.

⁵Come, ^(H)house of Jacob, and let’s walk in the ^(I)light of the Lord.
⁶For You have ^(J)abandoned Your people, the house of Jacob,
Because they are filled with influences from the east,
And they are soothsayers ^(K)like the Philistines.
They also ^[d]^(L)strike bargains with the children of foreigners.
⁷Their land has also been filled with silver and gold
And there is no end to their treasures;
Their land has also been filled with ^(M)horses,
And there is no end to their chariots.
⁸Their land has also been ^(N)filled with idols;
They worship the ^(O)work of their hands,
That which their fingers have made.
⁹So ^(P)the common person has been humbled
And the person of importance has been brought low,
But ^(Q)do not forgive them.
¹⁰^(R)Enter the rocky place and hide in the dust
^(S)From the terror of the Lord and from the splendor of His majesty.
¹¹The ^[e]^(T)proud look of humanity will be brought low,
And the ^(U)arrogance of people will be humbled;
And the Lord alone will be exalted on that day.

A Day of Reckoning Coming

¹²For the Lord of armies will have a day of reckoning
Against ^(V)everyone who is arrogant and haughty,
And against everyone who is lifted up,
That he may be brought low.
¹³And it will be against all the cedars of Lebanon that are lofty and lifted up,
Against all the ^(W)oaks of Bashan,
¹⁴Against all the ^(X)lofty mountains,
Against all the hills that are lifted up,
¹⁵Against every ^(Y)high tower,
Against every fortified wall,
¹⁶Against all the ^(Z)ships of Tarshish
And against all the delightful ships.
¹⁷And the pride of humanity will be humbled
And the arrogance of people will be brought low;
And the Lord alone will be exalted on that day,
¹⁸And the ^(AA)idols will completely vanish.
¹⁹People will ^(AB)go into caves of the rocks
And into holes in the ^[f]ground
Away from the terror of the Lord
And the splendor of His majesty,
When He arises ^(AC)to terrify the earth.
²⁰On that day people will ^(AD)throw away to the moles and the ^(AE)bats
Their idols of silver and their idols of gold,
Which they made for themselves to worship,
²¹In order to ^(AF)go into the clefts of the rocks and the crannies of the cliffs
Before the terror of the Lord and the splendor of His majesty,
When He arises to terrify the earth.
²²^[g]^(AG)Take no account of man, whose breath of life is in his nostrils;
For ^[h]^(AH)why should he be esteemed?

The Voice of the Lord in the Storm.

A Psalm of David.

29 ^(A)Ascribe to the Lord, ^[a]sons of the mighty,
Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
²Ascribe to the Lord the glory ^[b]due His name;
Worship the Lord ^(B)in holy attire.

³The ^(C)voice of the Lord is on the waters;
The God of glory ^(D)thunders,
The Lord is over ^[c]^(E)many waters.
⁴The voice of the Lord is ^(F)powerful,
The voice of the Lord is majestic.
⁵The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
Yes, the Lord breaks ^(G)the cedars of Lebanon in pieces.
⁶He makes Lebanon ^(H)skip like a calf,
And ^(I)Sirion like a young wild ox.
⁷The voice of the Lord divides ^[d]flames of fire.
⁸The voice of the Lord ^[e]shakes the wilderness;
The Lord shakes the wilderness of ^(J)Kadesh.
⁹The voice of the Lord makes ^(K)the deer give birth
And strips the forests bare;
And ^(L)in His temple everything says, “Glory!”

¹⁰The Lord sat as King at the ^(M)flood;
Yes, the Lord sits as ^(N)King forever.
¹¹^[f]The Lord will give ^(O)strength to His people;
^[g]The Lord will bless His people with ^(P)peace.

John 6:60-71

⁶⁰So then many of His ^(A)disciples, when they heard this, said, “^(B)This statement is very ^[a]unpleasant; who can listen to it?” ⁶¹But Jesus, ^(C)aware that His disciples were complaining about this, said to them, “Is this ^[b]^(D)offensive to you? ⁶²What then if you see ^(E)the Son of Man ^(F)ascending to where He was before? ⁶³^(G)It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh provides no benefit; ^(H)the words that I have spoken to you are spirit, and are life. ⁶⁴But there are ^(I)some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus ^(J)knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and ^(K)who it was who would ^[c]betray Him. ⁶⁵And He was saying, “For this reason I have ^(L)told you that no one can come to Me unless ^(M)it has been granted him from the Father.”

Peter’s Confession of Faith

⁶⁶As a result of this many of His ^(N)disciples ^(O)left, and would no longer walk with Him. ⁶⁷So Jesus said to ^(P)the twelve, “You do not want to leave also, do you?” ⁶⁸^(Q)Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have ^(R)words of eternal life. ⁶⁹And we have already believed and have come to know that You are ^(S)the Holy One of God.” ⁷⁰Jesus answered them, “^(T)Did I Myself not choose you, ^(U)the twelve? And yet one of you is ^(V)a devil.” ⁷¹Now He meant Judas ^(W)the son of Simon Iscariot; for he, ^(X)one of ^(Y)the twelve, ^[d]was going to betray Him.
